Why Was Jesus Born In A Manger?

Why was Jesus born in a stable and placed in a manger?  After all, Jesus, the Son of God, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the very Word of God and Creator of All Things, deserves better, doesn’t He?  If Jesus was born in a place befitting His place of power and glory, that place would have to be built for Him, because such a place did not even exist in the time of Christ.  Indeed such a place has never existed.

But why a manger?JesusManger

Why Was Jesus Born In A Manger?

I was reading the story of Jesus’ birth in Luke 2 and contemplating, as I often do, why was Jesus born in a manger?  And I had the following thoughts.jesus_manger_1

First, if we believe that Jesus is God in human flesh, the King of King’s and Lord of Lords, then there is no place on earth that is too lofty for His birthplace.  In fact, there is no place on earth, not even the richest palace in all of earth’s history that is worthy to be His birthplace.

But why a manger?

If Jesus had been born in a palace, there would be many people that would not feel worthy to approach one so great.  But to be born in a manger, the poorest of the poor, no one would feel unworthy to approach such a one.

And then, the further question, why would God be born as a baby?

Again, if God entered into the world in any way that displayed His true glory, people would be afraid to approach Him.  Look at the Israelites at Mt. Sinai.  God was on the mountain and it must have been a terrifying sight.  They were willing to have Moses speak with God and then to them, but they weren’t going anywhere near there.

Do you ever consider how God had to humble Himself to allow Himself to be born as a helpless baby?  The child of poor parents of no reputation whatsoever, and to be raised by the very hands that He created.

But Jesus is approachable by anyone, no matter what station in life they fill, no matter poor or rich, all are welcome.  Jesus says to each of us:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  —  Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus was born in a manger among animals, but He is God’s Savior for every man, woman, and child.  If you have not experienced His salvation, won’t you come to Him now and take His yoke upon yourself?  God loves you, and is waiting to give you the gift of salvation from your sins and eternal life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. —   John 3:16
