In Jesus Is True Joy!

Are You Prepared To Do Battle Today?

I just read That’s Why They Play The Game which talks about the importance of preparing to meet your opponent when playing a game like basketball or soccer.  No matter what the other team’s abilities or record, we must never assume that we have won the game before the game is played.  We must never assume an attitude of over-confidence, but rather, of being fully prepared for battle in every contest we engage in.

It is true of sporting contests.  How much more true is it if our Christian walk?

Sure, we all know how it all ends.  Satan and his minions will end up in the lake of fire.  To put it into sports terms, at the end of the season, we will emerge victorious. But still, every day there is a new “game” for which to prepare.  Every day there is another battle that may be won or lost, and the only way to be assured of victory over Satan is if we are ever vigilant, ever preparing.

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  –  1 Peter 5:8 (NASB)

Satan knows his time is coming, but until that day, he will do all that he can to seek to destroy, to confuse, to intimidate, and to neutralize as many as have faith in the Lord as he can.

Therefore, we must be prepared each day as if we will face our most cunning opponent.  We must, each day, immerse ourselves in prayer.  We must be well versed in the Word of God and studying it daily.  We must practice putting on the whole armor of God until we are expert at it!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,  and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.  –  Ephesians 6:10–18 (NIV)

But our bodies can be a source of all sorts of sin as well.  That is why Paul entreats us to present our bodies to God, a living sacrifice.  Not only is this our reasonable service, but it is a necessity if we are to frustrate the sinful desires that live within us our whole lives.

Now, are we ready?  We have the Word of God, we have our prayer, we have on the armor of God.  We have even submitted our bodies to God.  Yes, it seems we are ready, but wait!

Have we been receiving advice as a team from the coach?  That is, are we gathering in fellowship and worship with other believers and listening to the Word being preached by a minister of the gospel?

Okay, now we are ready!  And so prepared, in all things we are more than conquerors in Christ!  Today is another day of Victory In Jesus!

  5. Thanks for referencing my article. Very good and important post! We cannot let our guard down or this will allow Satan an opportunity to prey upon us. We must always be ready for the tricks and attacks of the Enemy (Satan).

    • No, thank you! I was very impressed by your article, and my mind made the connection between the physical and mental preparation that must take place before a sporting event, and the spiritual preparation that must take place in the believer every day.

I likely would not have written this article without your inspiration.

I have also added you to my blogroll.

    • Amen! And thanks for taking the time to read and comment. My prayer in writing is that I may encourage others, as well as myself, to live a more Christ centered life. I want to know that each day, I am living as a friend of God, and not a friend to the world.

Again, thanks for your post. I added your blog to my blogroll.
